In Kindergarten we teach writing through the Writing Workshop method. Writing Workshop is a method of writing instruction developed by Lucy Calkins and educators involved in the Reading and Writing Project at Columbia University. Workshop structure: Mini –Lesson The 10 min mini-lesson gives a teacher the opportunity to give direct instructions to students and model the lesson through teacher’s own writing. Independent Writing The majority of time of Writing Workshop is devoted to independent writing. During this time, students are prewriting, drafting, revising, editing and publishing their pieces. During independent writing time, the teacher confers with student about their writing. The purpose of conferring is to talk to students about their writing, to reinforce the teaching point and/or teach something new. Sharing Sharing is a very important part of the Writing Workshop. During the sharing students explain what they have worked on during their independent writing. This gives students the opportunity to observe and learn from each other.
